E o que e' que eu ando a ler 'a noitinha para dormir melhor e no metro para a viagem ser mais agradavel? Recomendo? Sim! Estou a gostar imenso!

Susto

Hoje apanhei um susto!! Ando a trabalhar nas correcoes a tese, de acordo com os comentarios do meu orientador (que alias estao a demorar muito mais tempo do que o esperado). Eis senao quando... claro! O computador crachou! Comecou a queixar-se que eu tinha referencias a mais (!!!). Bom, o que vale e' que eu guardo tudo de cada vez que escrevo uma frase, e o azar nao foi grande :)

The Lord of the Rings:an allegory of the PhD?

The story starts with Frodo: a young hobbit, quite bright, a bit dissatisfied with what he's learnt so far and with his mates back home who just seem to want to get jobs and settle down and drink beer. He's also very much in awe of his tutor and mentor, the very senior professor Gandalf, so when Gandalf suggests he take on a short project for him (carrying the Ring to Rivendell), he agrees.

Frodo very quickly encounters the shadowy forces of fear and despair which will haunt the rest of his journey and leave permanent scars on his psyche, but he also makes some useful friends. In particular, he spends an evening down the pub with Aragorn, who has been wandering the world for many years as Gandalf's postdoc and becomes his adviser when Gandalf isn't around.
After Frodo has completed his first project, Gandalf (along with head of department Elrond) proposes that the work should be extended. He assembles a large research group, including visiting students Gimli and Legolas, the foreign postdoc Boromir, and several of Frodo's own friends from his undergraduate days. Frodo agrees to tackle this larger project, though he has mixed feelings about it. ("'I will take the Ring', he said, 'although I do not know the way.'")
Very rapidly, things go wrong. First, Gandalf disappears and has no more interaction with Frodo until everything is over. (Frodo assumes his supervisor is dead: in fact, he's simply found a more interesting topic and is working on that instead.) At his first international conference in Lorien, Frodo is cross-questioned terrifyingly by Galadriel, and betrayed by Boromir, who is anxious to get the credit for the work himself. Frodo cuts himself off from the rest of his team: from now on, he will only discuss his work with Sam, an old friend who doesn't really understand what it's all about, but in any case is prepared to give Frodo credit for being rather cleverer than he is. Then he sets out towards Mordor.

The last and darkest period of Frodo's journey clearly represents the writing-up stage, as he struggles towards Mount Doom (submission), finding his burden growing heavier and heavier yet more and more a part of himself; more and more terrified of failure; plagued by the figure of Gollum, the student who carried the Ring before him but never wrote up and still hangs around as a burnt-out, jealous shadow; talking less and less even to Sam. When he submits the Ring to the fire, it is in desperate confusion rather than with confidence, and for a while the world seems empty.

Eventually it is over: the Ring is gone, everyone congratulates him, and for a few days he can convince himself that his troubles are over. But there is one more obstacle to overcome: months later, back in the Shire, he must confront the external examiner Saruman, an old enemy of Gandalf, who seeks to humiliate and destroy his rival's protege. With the help of his friends and colleagues, Frodo passes through this ordeal, but discovers at the end that victory has no value left for him. While his friends return to settling down and finding jobs and starting families, Frodo remains in limbo; finally, along with Gandalf, Elrond and many others, he joins the brain drain across the Western ocean to the new land beyond.

Celulas

Acabei o meu ultimo capitulo de resultados. Em termos de "primeira versao" ja so falta terminar a discussao. :)

E como prometi uma foto aqui a tempos, deixo umas celulazinhas que vi ao microscopio. O que estao a ver sao duas celulas NK (assassinas natas) a atacar uma celular tumoral (a verde). Eu tenho andado a estudar as zonas de contacto, que teem uns "blobs" verdes. E' lindo, nao e'? :)

I just finished my last results chapter. For my first version of the thesis, I'm only missing the discussion.

And as I promised a new photo some time ago, I leave you with some cells that I imaged on the microscope. Here you can see 2 NK (Natural Killer) interacting with a tumour cell (in green). I have been studying the contact area, with those green "blobs". Beautiful, ha?

Tese

PostDoc

Nao consegui esperar mais e resolvi telefonar a FCT...
E fiquei a saber que e' melhor esperar sentada porque resultados so la para o fim do mes...


(I could not wait any longer, so I called my sponsors... And I am glad I did, because at least now I know that the results will only be anounced by the end of this month...)

Ontem

Ah! E' verdade, ontem esqueci-me de dizer que os Brits andavam todos contentes: houve um Oscar para a Rainha de Inglaterra e outro para o Rei da Escocia ;)

Curious that yesterday one Oscar was won by the Queen of England and another by the King of Scotland... ;)

Introducao

Hoje entreguei a introducao ao chefe para ele comentar! :)
Fixe, alguma coisa ja esta!!!
Os Metodos tb ja estao prontos para lhe dar e agora, e' trabalhar nos resultados...
E nao ha novidades da FCT...

Today I gave my intro for my supervisor to comment. :) At least something is done!!
The methods are ready as well, and now it's time to finalise the results sections...

Tao perto e tao longe...

Este blog ultimamente esta a ficar so paleio... Nao ha fotos... So que nao tenho tirado novas, e nem sequer tenho olhado para as "velhas". Um dia destes ponho aqui uma foto nova...
Quanto a tese, pois, esta quase, como ja tem estado quase de algum tempo para ca :S Encravei na discussao... Amanha vou entregar a introducao ao meu chefe. Ainda vou trabalhar nisso agora... E para a semana tenho que apresentar o meu lab meeting (!!!) Bom, acho que e' melhor ir trabalhar.

Ja agora, em breve deverei saber dos resultados da FCT... Se alguem souber se ja se sabe alguma coisa, me diga, vai, que e' para eu telefonar-lhes.

E ja agora, para variar um pouco, descobri uma coisa interessante aqui ha dias, que a minha colega de casa me contou. Voces ja devem ter visto que os Japoneses usam umas mascaras a frente da boca de vez em quando. Pois pensava eu que era por respeito as outras pessoas, para nao passarem a constipacao. Pois afinal parece que eles fazem isso por causa das alergias! Aparentemente as alergias sao muito graves no Japao, nao percebo bem por que, e eles sofrem imenso com isso. Vai dai, usam uma mascara para se protegerem e as vezes ate oculos de piscina (!!!). As coisas que uma pessoa aprende...

E pronto, de volta ao trabalho... Hoje nao me apetece escrever em ingles :P

Preciso de ajuda (I need help)

Estou aqui com umas duvidas de estetica quanto a minha tese, e entao gostava de ter outras opinioes (quantas mais melhor, va, ajudem-me). E' melhor espacamento duplo ou 1.5? Acham que da melhor aspecto uma tese volumosa? E ja agora, acham que o texto fica melhor justificado ou alinhado a esquerda?

I'm here with some doubts about the looks of my thesis, and so I decided to ask for your opinions (the more the merrier!!!). Do you think it's better to have double-spacing or 1.5? I.e., do you think that a "fat" thesis looks better? Also, does the text look better justified or aligned on the left-hand side?

1. A escrita da tese nao esta a correr mal... ate ao final de Fevereiro devo entregar uma primeira versao ao meu orientador para ele ler. (Ontem fiz uma figura muito gira para a minha introducao)

E adivinhem onde eu fui na terca???
(And guess where I went last Tuesday?) Ver na nossa Seleccao derrotar o Brasil, sim senhor :) No estadio dos Emirados, onde o Arsenal costuma jogar.
(I went to see the Portuguese National team beating the Brasilians :) It was at the Emirates stadium, where Arsenal plays.)

Foi bonito, estava toda a gente muito simpatica, e todos falavamos a mesma lingua!!
(Everybody was being really nice and friendly, and we all spoke the same language ;) )
O unico problema foi mesmo o frio... Brrr... estava um briol!! Alias, reparem no nosso banco la atras! Com a bela da mantinha nas pernas, eh eh eh!!!

(The only problem was the freezing cold... Notice the, how do you say this... hummm... our players siting in the background (how do call the place where the extra players and the manager sit?) . They have a nice blancket on their legs, eh eh eh!!!)

Mas os nosso lugares eram fantasticos! Quinta fila a contar do campo. Dava para ver os brincos ;)

(But our seats were simply amazing! 5th row from the field. Thanks Rita!)
E no final foi o melhor: ganhamos 2-0!!!!
(And the best was at the end: we won 2-0!!!!)

E sobrevivemos ao frio e a fila de volta para o metro (estavam la quase 60,000 pessoas)...

(And we survived the cold and the queu to the tube (the attendance was nearly 60,000 people)...)

Da ultima vez que fui ao Tate Modern fotografei uns conselhos sobre "Como trabalhar melhor" (traduzido a letra). Ora, vem mesmo a proposito, agora que quero ver se escrevo a tese em 1 mes!!

Last time I went to the Tate Modern, I photographed some tips on "How to work better". They are just in time for my thesis writting up, which needs to be finished in one month!!

Ora as boas noticias sao: ja acabei as figuras (quase...)!!

Now the good news are: I've finished my figures (well, nearly...)!!

Sim, nevou!!!

Yes, it snowed!!!

Hoje de manha, tinha eu acabado de acordar mal-disposta como sempre quando abri a janela e...
(I had just got out of bed, grumpy as usual, when I looked at the window, and...) Tinha nevado durante a noite!!! Que bonito! :) Ate fiquei com um sorriso na cara.
(It had snowed overnight!! How beautifull! :) It even made smile in the morning.)

Peguei na maquina e la fui eu tirar umas fotos a caminho do Imperial. A neve ainda estava fresca, e caminhei por onde uma raposa (?) tinha andado antes.

(I grabbed my camera and went to take a couple of photos on my way to college. The snow was still fresh and I walked where a fox (?) had walked before.)

No caminho pelo meio do cemiterio a neve ja tinha comecado a derreter.

(On the path through the graveryard the snow had already started melting.)

Mas no cemiterio em si tudo estava muito branquinho e bonito.

(But in the graveyard itself everything was still untouched and white. Beautiful.)

E pronto, fui trabalhar, mais um dia pouco produtivo, e a noite ja nao havia neve... Mas ja ficou aqui no blog para a posteridade!

(I went to work, another unproductive day, and at night the snow was gone... But now it's here, in my blog, for eternity!)

New Year

After Xmas back home, New Year's Eve was spent in London.

Xmas lab event

On the 18th of December, just before going home, we had our Xmas lab event. It all started with a tour to the Dennis Severs' house. It was interesting, but maybe not advisable for people allergic to dust (like me). This photo was taken at the entrance.
(Mesmo antes de voar para Portugal, foi o dia do "evento natalicio" do lab. Começamos com uma visita a casa (Dennis Severs). E' engraçada, mas talvez nao aconselhavel a pessoas alergicas ao po... humm... tao a ver, nao e'? Esta foto foi tirada a entrada da casa.)

After this tour we went for lunch on a nearby pub, where I got these "racing nannies" from Secret (Anne) Santa :)
(Fomos depois almoçar a um pub, onde trocamos presentes. Eu recebi estas velhinhas corredoras :) )

And to finish up, guess where we went? Yep, to the pub!!! But, followed by a short stop at the National Theatre, where we heard a bit of live Blues and by a guided walk to the Westminster area, that finished with us going to attend a debate at the House of Commons. And finally, yes, pub again...

(E para acabar, onde e' que fomos? Claro, ao pub!!! Mas depois ainda passamos pelo National Theatre onde ouvimos Blues ao vivo e fizemos uma visita guiada na area de Westminster, que acabou connosco a ouvir um debate com 6 pessoas na "Casa dos Comuns" (o parlamento deles). E no final, sim, pub outra vez...)
Enfim, foi um dia em grande!

Back to work!

Yes, I am back to work! After a brief interruption to visit labs, celebrate Xmas and have some rest, I am now back. And now, I will really concentrate on my thesis writing ... I'll post some photos soon, that I have taken during these last couple of weeks. Keep tuned.

Pois 'e, ca estou de volta ao trabalho! Apos uma breve interrupcao para visitar laboratorios, para o Natal e para descansar um bocadito, estou de volta. E agora chegou a hora de me concentrar "a serio" na minha tese... Em breve adiciono aqui umas fotos que tirei durante estes dias, mas agora tenho que ver se faco alguma coisa.
